DETROIT Toyota Motor Corp. trounced the domestic automakers in the U.S. marketplace last month, posting a 25 percent year-over-year sales increase. General Motors Corp. and DaimlerChrysler AG each saw their sales slip by a few percentage points, while Ford Motor Co.'s sales gained 4.7 percent.

People are delaying truck purchases, cutting into profits and forcing Ford Motor Co., General Motors Corp. and DaimlerChrysler AGs Chrysler Group to idle some assembly lines.

Scion, Toyota Motor Corp.'s youth-focused, small-car brand, has decided it is too hot for its own good. The brand is on track to beat its 150,000-car-a-y ear sales goal by 25,000 vehicles in 2006. That is a big reason why Toyota has surpassed DaimlerChrysler this year to become the No. 3 automaker in the United States in sales.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Detroit's auto industry leaders said they had a productive meeting with President Bush on health care, trade and energy. Time will tell whether the gathering helps the U.S. automakers struggling against foreign competitors. Bush assured leaders of General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group on Tuesday that he understood they were making "tough choices" to strengthen their companies against stiff competition. He promised continuing dialogue as they seek help on trade and health care issues.

Faced with vehicles languishing on its U.S. dealer lots, DaimlerChrysler AG said Tuesday it will slash retail deliveries by nearly 24 percent in the third quarter.The lineup of subsidiary Chrysler Group has been bogged down by gas guzzlers and a misplaced faith in summer incentives. The move would follow the lead of Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp., which previously announced production cuts in response to slow sales of trucks and SUVs.Chrysler is cutting retail shipments in the quarter that ends Sept. 30 by 90,000 vehicles to 290,000 vehicles.
